Renowned artist Beyoncé has committed a personal donation of one million dollars to assist with the recovery efforts in Colombia. This significant sum is directed towards the Chocó region, which was severely affected by a 7.4-magnitude earthquake earlier this month. The funds are designated for providing crucial food and shelter to the communities most impacted by the disaster.

The Scope of the Disaster and Humanitarian Needs

The recent earthquake on August 10th tragically resulted in the loss of at least 312 lives and destroyed approximately 29,000 homes, according to reports from The Associated Press citing central government figures. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs further indicated that an estimated 69,000 individuals, representing about 10% of Chocó's population, were either affected or displaced by the seismic event. Organizations like Food for the Poor and World Central Kitchen are also actively seeking support to bolster relief initiatives.

Shakira's Commitment to Educational Rebuilding

Adding to the wave of support, fellow musician Shakira previously pledged $1.25 million last week towards rebuilding educational infrastructure in Colombia. Her charitable foundation will oversee the reconstruction of ten schools and a university, ensuring that affected children can return to their studies. This endeavor is a collaborative effort, combining Shakira's personal contribution with funds from Live Nation, the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, and CAF, the development bank of Latin America and the Caribbean. Shakira emphasized the critical importance of reinstating educational facilities, stating that every day children miss school is a day their future is compromised, and expressed her deep desire to see these institutions rebuilt in a region she holds dear.
